Is Garlic A Reliable Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is such a big problem and often, it can be difficult to treat. Men looking for a natural solution go through multiple possibilities, trying to identify the safest and the most effective one. While many options are being advertised as a viable solution, some of them can’t really get the job done.

If you look for a solution online, you’ll probably come across garlic as a treatment for ED. Does it really work, however? Let’s take a look at the evidence and try to reach a valid conclusion.

How Does It Work?

The premise of using garlic for the treatment of erectile dysfunction is simple. As you probably know already, ED is a problem linked to poor blood circulation. If sufficient quantities of blood fail reaching and entering the penis, the erection will be a weak one or a man will be incapable of getting an erection altogether.

These are the reasons why heart disease, atherosclerosis, high cholesterol and high blood pressure are all considered risk factors for the development of ED.

Garlic is one of the most potent medicinal plants known to mankind. Consuming about four cloves of garlic per day can be sufficient to improve circulation, even in the small peripheral blood vessels. There’s also some evidence that the consumption of garlic regulates cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of plaque formation in the blood vessels.

There’s also some evidence that the consumption of garlic increases nitric oxide production. Nitric oxide is a substance found in the blood vessels. It helps the tissues relax, enabling more blood to pass through. Enhanced nitric oxide production is one of the keys to strengthening the erectile response, especially in older men.

Garlic can be consumed in food or you can opt for a supplement, if you wan to experience the health improvements it delivers. Garlic powder and garlic capsules are both available on the market.

The Evidence

Researchers have long been interested in the manner that garlic affects male sexual performance.

Studies are still limited but the clinical experiments carried out so far have promising results.

One of the clinical studies showed that garlic can be used to boost testosterone levels naturally. It was presented in the Journal of Nutrition in 2001. In the experiment, rats were fed different diets. Some of them were given garlic powder and others simply consumed foods high in protein.

After 28 days, researchers took the testosterone levels of the rats. Testosterone levels were significantly higher in the rats that were fed a protein diet and were given garlic powder.

When it comes to the effectiveness of garlic for the treatment of ED, a small clinical trial was initiated by Dr. Graham Jackson from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. The researcher worked with eight men suffering from ED who were asked to consume four cloves of garlic per day. The experiment continued for a period of three months.

Six of the volunteers saw an improvement in their erectile function by the end of the experiment.

One more intriguing study is worth quoting when it comes to the effectiveness of garlic for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. University of Alabama at Birmingham researchers presented the results of their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal.

In their experiment, researchers found out that garlic interacts with red blood cells, forming hydrogen sulphide. This substance has the power to relax blood vessels, allow more blood to pass through and improve circulation. These improvements in cardiovascular health also lead to the strengthening of the erectile response.

Obviously, more research will be required to figure out whether garlic can be considered a reliable solution for common male reproductive problems. For the time being, garlic can be incorporated in a healthy diet, especially when it comes to protecting the heart and improving circulation.

How To Take Garlic

If you want to use garlic for the treatment or the prevention of erectile dysfunction, you should definitely opt for the raw cloves. Keep in mind, however, that raw garlic could potentially irritate the stomach. In such instances, garlic capsules would be a much better pick.

Most of the studies mentioned in the article so far used doses of 600 to 1,200 milligrams of garlic taken in several doses throughout the day. You may want to start with the smaller dose and move on to a higher quantity after you assess your tolerance.

The side effects of using raw garlic are limited. A few of the common ones include bad breath, acid reflux, gas, nausea and diarrhea. All of these are indicative of a digestive intolerance. In such an instance, switch to capsules or a male enhancement supplement that features garlic in its composition.

One thing to keep in mind prior to getting started is that garlic could potentially interact with some medications. The most common ones include isoniazid, medications for the treatment of HIV, saquinavir, cyclosporine and medications that slow down the clotting of blood.

While garlic is incredibly beneficial, it may be insufficient for the treatment of erectile dysfunction on its own. In such instances, you should consider the consumption of garlic cloves in conjunction with male enhancement supplementation.
